For me, writing short stories has always been a huge challenge. You have to be able to tell an entire story in all its various aspects in a limited amount of space. I've enjoyed mixed success with it over the years.
This particular short story was written for a Washington Post short story competition in 2007. Unfortunately, I didn't make the cut, but this is really pretty good IMHO. Enjoy!
